Car driving lessons (EDT)
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a structured training programme for learner drivers consisting of 12 driving sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), or six sessions if you are eligible for reduced EDT.
The purpose of EDT is to save lives. Getting a driving licence is a privilege, not a right. As a learner driver you are exposed to greater risks when using the roads due to inexperience. Maximising your road safety knowledge and behaviours helps you to develop the skills and confidence needed to share the road safely with others. By completing EDT you will build a strong foundation on which to become a better and safer driver.
Pre Driving Test
I provide a pre driving test to help you prepare for the real test and feel more confident on the day.
- Explain the format of the test
- Assess your driving
- Manoeuver lessons - reversing around corners, 3 point turn
- Go over driving route
- Practical and Theory questions
- Final checks before test
Reduced ETD Lessons
I provide lessons to foreign licence holders who qualify for the reduced ETD programme.
A reduced Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme including exemption to the 6 month waiting period rule is available for foreign licence holders who can't exchange their driving licence in Ireland. It involves taking 6 driving lessons instead of the usual 12 and you don't have to wait 6 months to sit a driving test.
How do I qualify for reduced EDT/and exemption from six month rule?
- You must hold a foreign driving licence.
- You must have held a licence for at least two years prior to the issue of your Irish learner permit.
- Your licence must not have expired more than six months on the date of receipt of application form.
- You must be resident in Ireland.
- You must hold an Irish learner permit.
Jeep and Trailer Lessons
What you need to know about towing a trailer on a car licence?
If you have a category B driving licence (car/jeep) you can tow a small trailer. If you want to tow a larger trailer you must have a category BE licence. For further information see licence categories.
Category B
You can tow a trailer where:
- MAM1 no greater than 750 kg and/or
- MAM1 of trailer exceeds 750 kg but the MAM1 of the vehicle and trailer combined does not exceed 3,500 kg.
Note: As a general rule a category B licence does not allow you to tow a horsebox or livestock trailer transporting animals
Category BE
You can tow a trailer in all cases where:
- MAM1 of the vehicle and trailer combination is greater than 3,500 kg but less than 7,000 kg
- MAM1 of the trailer is greater than 750 kg. However note in certain cases category B licence will allow you to tow a trailer over 750 kg.
Note: A car with a towing capacity of 2,000 kg can draw a trailer with a plated MAM¹ of 3,500 kg provided the combination of the weight of the trailer and any load does not exceed the towing capacity of the towing vehicle e.g. 2,000 kg.
Why is it important to tow the correct trailer with a vehicle?
If you are towing a trailer that is greater than the permitted MAM1 you are breaking the law and this has serious implications for your own safety and for that of other road users. You are legally responsible for having the correct licence and not exceeding the towing capacity of your vehicle.
